Greetings Dear Friends
Wasn't it Halloween just last week? We're quickly heading into my favorite time of year. (not!)
Christmas! Cold slushy days, consumerism gone wild, Santa Clausea and CHRISTMAS CAROLS! Yay - t'is the season. Am I being negative? Sorry.
Welcome to the twelfth month. This month's article is a light look at the phenomenon of the number twelve. Hope you enjoy.

Peace and love, Dennis.

December is the twelfth month of the year. I thought it would be fun to talk about something called the Law of Twelve, sometimes called the Law of Octaves, or the Second Fundamental Law of the Universe.
Twelve is a very significant number that appears over and over in many contexts in various human cultures. Here are some better known examples: twelve months in the year, twelve signs of the Zodiac, twelve hours on a clock-face, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve gods in the Greek pantheon, twelve apostles surrounding Jesus, a unit of quantity called a dozen, etc. There are far too many examples to list here, but suffice it to say we've had an unusual love of the number twelve. Why?
When scientists identify a universal 'law', they are really saying that they have discovered a way that energy consistently behaves here in the physical universe. It turns out that energy often behaves in ways that involve the number twelve. In geometry it is noted that if a sphere had other equal sized spheres perfectly packed around it - each of them touching the surface of the one in the centre and of the spheres next to it - there would be twelve such spheres. The one in the centre would be the thirteenth. In music there are twelve notes or semi-tones in an octave. To say it in a totally unscientific way, energy likes to divide itself into increments of twelve. We don't know why - that's just the way it works. It's a mystery.
Further to that, within the twelve, energy likes to arrange itself into patterns of seven. There are also countless examples of seven in our Earth culture, i.e. seven days, seven notes in a scale, seven colors in the spectrum, seven chakras, seven deadly sins, and many manifestations of seven in sacred geometry.
To get even more unscientific, according to several mystical traditions, all of creation is divided into twelve parts, which we have called dimensions or realms or levels of reality. If you are reading this essay, then it is very likely that you are currently experiencing the third level, often called the physical or material realm. The entire universe is only one twelfth of the entirety of creation. Within this physical realm there is said to be twelve sub-realms - different 'flavours' of physicality, only one of which we are experiencing at any given moment. We all exist in many realms simultaneously, but generally we are only aware of one at a time. Or something like that.
Anyway, as we count down the twelve days of Christmas, if we can maintain a constant state of love and compassion - even while trudging through the shopping mall listening to obnoxious Christmas carols - then maybe, just maybe, we will soon be ready to graduate to the next realm. Ho ho ho.

We are happy to be playing at the
Waring House. We'd love to see you there.
