WHAT IS A VIRGIN?

OCTOBER, 2018

Greetings Dear Friends

Welcome to October. 'What is a Virgin' may seem like a bit of a strange topic for this month's article. Considering what is going on south of the border these days with the controversy around the Kavanaugh appointment, it might be apropos. The article talks about how the Church has edited and changed the meaning of things to suit their agenda, in this case the subordination and disempowerment of women.

I'm very excited to have been selected to be a part of the Guelph Studio Tour. If you'd like to drop by on Sat., Oct. 13 or Sun., Oct. 14, we'd love to see you. See details below.

WHAT IS A VIRGIN?

The other day a friend and I were talking about the word 'virgin' and I was mentioning some interesting info I'd encountered years ago. Some scholars say that this word had a very different meaning back in the pre-Christian days than it does today. They say that back then it was used to refer to a strong, independent woman of means who was not attached to a man. (The first syllable of 'virgin' comes from the same root as the first syllable of 'virile' and 'virtue'- it connotates strength.) There are several applications of this word in the Bible and elsewhere, in which such a meaning makes more sense. It's been suggested that it was the Roman Church that changed this word to refer to a woman who has never had sexual intercourse.

In pre-Christian days most cultures had a goddess figure that was worshipped. Typically a goddess had three aspects, the nubile/sexual qualities of youth, the maternal/nurturing qualities of middle age and the crone/wisdom of old age.

Aware that the people required a female deity, the Church attempted to fill this need by inventing the image of the Virgin Mary andproclaiming her as being the 'mother of God', and thus a deity in her own right. This took place at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. Much of the 'mother' iconography of the Egyptian goddess, Isis - depicting her with stars in her hair, holding a baby, etc. - were appropriated and assigned to the Virgin Mary. They promoted the idea of the Immaculate Conception - that Mary became pregnant without having to have sex - and also the notion that her living body was taken up into heaven, which is called the Assumption. In 1854, Pope Pius XII passed a decree to this effect.

The Roman Church ignored the 'sex' and 'wisdom' components of the goddess. They downplayed the idea that Jesus' real mother was likely a powerful woman of position, a descendant of King David who was allowed to travel unaccompanied by a man - a true Virgin. They wanted a goddess who was completely subordinate to men.

It seems clear to me that the Roman Church has played a huge role in disempowering women and making sex something dirty. Thankfully that is changing in the modern era. I also believe that the Church has disempowered us all by downplaying the idea that we are capable of shaping our circumstances using the power of our minds and wills. They prefer us to be hapless sheep who are dependent on the Church in order to access divinity. More on that in the next newsletter.
