GREETINGS EARTHLINGS!
I hope you are enjoying the summer.

In past newsletters I offered a series of articles on the 'power of consciousness'. (By the way, all previous newsletters are available on the 'newsletter' page at my website - whyislife.com.) In this issue I'll be presenting the first of a series of articles on 'magick'.

Also in this issue, I'll be sharing some news about what's going on in my life.

I'm excited about starting up the Chant Club this year - we'll have several musicians accompanying us.
Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Peace and love, Dennis.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC?

by Dennis Gaumond

So, do you? Nowadays most people don't believe in magic, which is why much less of it happens in the modern world.  In ancient times, however, it was much more commonplace and good magicians were highly respected.  But what is this thing called 'magick' and how does one become an effective magician? What is its history? What does science have to say on the matter? This article will explore these questions and will demonstrate the importance of this concept as it returns to help us through these trying times.
The word 'magic' has evolved to mean something very different than it did a long time ago. Nowadays we associate the word with a form of entertainment - with illusion, trickery and slight of hand. In the context of this article we are not concerned with that kind of magic. We need a definition of this concept that fits with the ancient understanding of this fascinating phenomenon.
Aleister Crowley, a famous 'magician' who lived in recent times, researched and wrote a great deal on the subject.  This is his definition; "Magic is the science and art of causing change, on a material as well as a spiritual level, to occur in conformity to will by altered states of consciousness." This is directly related to the notion, which is getting more attention lately, that consciousness has the power to shape our reality - that one can focus one's will to bring about a desired circumstance. The idea that humans are capable of 'performing miracles' is something that sounds like crazy-talk to most people in modern times. But this concept - the power of consciousness - was much more accepted in the past.

References to magic (sometimes spelled 'magick') appear often in ancient texts. The Apocrypha, those writings that were not selected for inclusion in the Hebrew Bible, as well as texts from Sumer, Egypt, India, Greece and other ancient societies, mention it often. There is certainly no shortage of references to magic in the Bible itself, in both the Old and New Testaments.

For example, in Exodus, chapters 7 through 12, there are many mentions of 'sorcerors', 'magicians', wise men' and 'miracle-working'. This is the segment where Moses keeps returning to the Pharaoh with increasingly powerful acts of magic, often referred to as the 'plagues', urging him to "let my people go". For the first few miracles, including turning rods into serpents and turning the waters of the Nile into blood, the Pharaoh was unimpressed claiming that his own court magicians could do the same. "Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers; and they also, the magicians of Egypt, did the same by their secret arts." ( Exodus, 7:11.) This passage clearly suggests that Moses and many others were capable of harnessing this 'divine' power. This is only one of countless references to magic in the Old Testament.

(In the next segment we will discuss magic in the New Testament, Jesus and the Nazorean tradition, the Merovingian Kings of France, the secret societies and more.)

WHAT'S NEW IN MY WORLD

In the spring I acquired a new American distributor for my CDs, 'Attracting Abundance' and 'Chant Magic'. At this point I am happy to say that they are both selling well south of the border.

I'm continuing to work on my new project, the 'Bhadra Collective' and to record our first CD, 'Soon Come Shekinah'. So far this music is generating a lot of excitement. It consists of exotic interpretations of chants from a variety of cultures that are more upbeat, more danceable. I've had the pleasure of working with some exciting guest musicians and vocalists. We are looking forward to a big coming-out concert a few months down the road. If anybody is interested in helping out with this project, in any way, please contact me.

Lately several people have been asking me to include notices of my upcoming blues gigs and concerts - so here it is:
